Flame Turtle

Category: Reptiles · Updated: August 4, 2026

1 Overview

The ‘Flame Turtle’ (huo yan gui) is a pet-market name for turtles showing bright orange-red flame-like markings. In most cases this is a colourfully marked red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta) lineage rather than a distinct species.

NOTE: the source lists it simply as ‘Painted Turtle’; we clarify that it is a flame-pattern morph within Trachemys scripta, not a separate binomial.

2 Appearance

The carapace shows vivid orange-to-red streaks over green, most intense along the scute seams – the ‘flame’ pattern that gives the name. Body plan matches the red-eared slider.

3 Care & Temperament

Care is identical to that of red-eared sliders: a roomy tank, strong filtration, a UVB basking spot, and a balanced diet. Shell rot follows dirty water.

4 Habitat & Environment

Aquatic with a dry, warm basking platform and good filtration; water in the mid 20s C.

5 Diet & Feeding

Omnivorous pellets, greens, and supplemental protein. Feed in water and keep portions small.
