Essential Rabbit-Care Basics Every Owner Should Know
📝 Summary
New owners often feel lost; without learning, rabbits are hard to keep alive. Here are the basics of rabbit care.
1 Essential Rabbit-Care Basics Every Owner Should Know
Rabbit-Care Essentials
1. Feeding frequency
Feeding style is the biggest factor. Kits need the most nutrition, fed little and often for better absorption—about three times a day. In fattening, the goal is full meals 2–3 times daily (digestion takes ~8 hours). Adjust by the rabbit’s condition for balanced nutrition.
2. Hygiene
Rabbits have weak immunity, so keep the hutch clean—clear waste and food scraps promptly, or long contact breeds disease. Clean the hutch at least 2–3 times a week; never leave leftover food overnight. Fresh food daily aids fattening and cuts disease.
3. Breeding
Breeding is hard to control but unavoidable—manage it well. If a doe is in heat but won’t mate, induce heat first, then breed for better results. Each mating takes 20–30 minutes; wait patiently, then lift and pat the hindquarters to aid conception, and return her to the cage. Does breed many times a year, so keep her well-fed.
4. Vaccination
Vaccines are key to prevention, giving early immunity. Inject every six months—common rabbit diseases are harmful, hard to cure, and contagious, so don’t skip them.
5. Separate caging
At certain times, separate caging is needed; high density causes fighting and hurts growth and breeding. First separation: move weaned kits from the doe. Second: when kits grow and crowd, about 3–5 months after the first separation.
That covers the basics of rabbit care. It’s actually simple once you know the habits.
