Dog Heartworm: Symptoms and Treatment
📝 Summary
Canine Heartworm Disease is a fatal threat; mosquito-borne thread parasite in heart/pulmonary artery, up to 30 cm, lives 5-7 years. Severely harms heart/vessels, causes cardiopulmonary dysfunction, death if untreated - top hidden killer!
1 Canine Heartworm Disease
How do dogs get heartworm?
Spread by mosquito bites. High prevalence in warm humid areas; any breed/age, indoor/outdoor, year-round can infect.
Mosquito bites infected dog, ingests immature microfilariae.
After 2-3 weeks, microfilariae become infectious L3 in mosquito; if it bites a healthy dog, transmits L3. Larvae penetrate skin, migrate, enter bloodstream toward pulmonary artery and heart.
After 6 months mature into adults in pulmonary artery/right ventricle, severely damaging cardiopulmonary function. Females produce microfilariae into circulation.
Symptoms of heartworm infection
Common symptoms:
Cough
Lethargy, reduced appetite
Reduced exercise tolerance, easy panting/fatigue
Difficulty breathing
Severe: coughing blood, anemia, ascites, heart/lung/liver/kidney failure, even death!
Early signs are mild, hard to notice; obvious symptoms mean serious disease.
How to protect dogs from heartworm
Prevention is the best strategy. Dogs can be bitten at birth, so start prevention at 6 weeks.
Prevention beats treatment; monthly preventive is safest, cheapest, simplest.
Common intestinal parasites in dogs?
Via mouth and placenta; infectious at any age, esp. harmful to puppies. Lives in gut, steals nutrients, may block intestine. Causes diarrhea, weakness, dull coat, bloated belly, malnutrition; severe liver/lung damage.
Hookworm
Via mouth, skin, placenta; hooks intestinal wall, sucks blood, causes blood loss/inflammation; severe anemia, emaciation, death.
Whipworm
Via mouth; in cecum/colon. Puppies: poor development, anemia; severe: stubborn diarrhea, bloody stool, typhlitis, colitis.
Tapeworm
Via fleas. Heavy infection causes malnutrition, emaciation, gut blockage. Common: dog rubs anus on ground.
Roundworm/hookworm can infect humans via soil eggs/larvae, contaminated fur/feces, or larval skin penetration (kids and immunocompromised most susceptible). Human symptoms vary: silent to mild, but can seriously harm health – larva migrans causing stomach pain, pneumonia, skin ulcers, blindness.
Immunocompromised patients untreated may have severe complications.
