Common Garter Snake

1 Overview

The common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) is among the most familiar North American snakes, found from gardens to wetlands. It is harmless, live-bearing, and one of the better beginner snakes.

Many attractive colour morphs exist thanks to captive breeding.

2 Appearance

Slender and 45-70 cm long, with one to three longitudinal stripes (typically yellow or red) running the length of a dark body. Pattern and colour vary widely by region.

3 Care & Temperament

Hardy and active; keep in a secure terrestrial terrarium with a temperature gradient, hides, and a water bowl for soaking. They are communal and tolerate company.

The main feeding issue is anorexia – offer appropriate prey and avoid stress during acclimation.

4 Habitat & Environment

Mimic temperate grassland and wetland edge: a substrate for burrowing, cover, a basking spot, and modest humidity.

5 Diet & Feeding

Naturally eats earthworms, fish, and amphibians; in captivity accept earthworms, fish, and appropriately sized rodents. Some individuals are picky – scenting helps.
