1 Cat Characteristics and Temperament
Physical traits. A cat is a carnivore with large canine teeth and sharp claws built for catching small prey; it also eats cooked grains. Its eyes see in the dark and its hearing is sharp enough to track a mouse. The famous litter-burying habit is innate — give a cat a box of sand, sawdust, or paper and it will use it. Cats groom constantly with their tongues and teeth, combing out fleas and keeping clean.
They love to climb and leap; their balance is better than most animals’. Despite a thick coat they hate the cold and, in winter, pile onto radiators, stoves, or cushions — older cats most of all.
Personality. Cats are restless and endlessly curious; they’ll stare at you, then perform tricks on cue. They enjoy play, rubbing against legs, and licking hands. Naturally solitary, they entertain themselves with a paper ball or box for ages. The stalking-and-pouncing ‘play’ with a caught mouse — toying with it before eating — is the hunter showing through.
