Can a dog’s hernia heal on its own?

If a dog’s hernia is not severe, it can heal on its own, usually within about a month. But if the condition is severe, it cannot heal by itself and needs prompt veterinary examination and treatment.

Dog hernias can be treated conservatively or surgically; after examination the vet will recommend conservative or surgical treatment based on severity. Generally, if the hernia is painless and can be reduced, conservative treatment can be used.
