Ball Python

1 Overview

The ball python (Python regius) is the most widely kept python, beloved for its docile nature, manageable size, and vast array of colour morphs. When threatened it coils into a tight ball – hence the name.

2 Appearance

Stocky and short, usually under 1.5 m, with a dark brown to black pattern of tan blotches on a light ground. Morphs range from pastel to pure white (piebald, albino, etc.).

3 Care & Temperament

A secure terrestrial enclosure with a warm-cool gradient, a hide on each end, and moderate humidity suits it. Generally the calmest python.

Mouth rot follows poor hygiene; also watch for feeding strikes.

4 Habitat & Environment

African grassland and savanna with burrows. Warm, with a humid retreat box to aid shedding.

5 Diet & Feeding

Feeds on appropriately sized rodents every 1-2 weeks. Hatchlings take pinkies; some adults fast seasonally – usually normal.
