Armadillo Girdled Lizard

1 Overview

The armadillo girdled lizard (Cordylus cataphractus) is a heavily armoured Southern African lizard that rolls into a tight ball when threatened, protecting its soft belly with its spiny tail – like a reptilian armadillo.

2 Appearance

The body is flattened and covered in overlapping, spiny osteoderms; the tail is ringed with spikes. Adults reach 15-20 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

A rocky, arid terrarium with crevices, high heat, and UVB. MBD and parasites are the main risks without proper care.

They are shy and best observed; they rarely bite but are defensive.

4 Habitat & Environment

Rocky outcrops of the South African Cape. Hot, dry, with tight rock crevices for shelter.

5 Diet & Feeding

Insectivorous: crickets, roaches, and other arthropods. Dust with calcium and vitamins; UVB supports bone health.
