1. Vision. Chinchillas are nocturnal with large eyes that see well in the dark, but they judge height poorly and may jump and get hurt, so supervise them when they are out playing.
2. Hearing. Very acute, catching even faint sounds. They are sensitive to noise, so keep the environment quiet to avoid stress.
3. Smell. Also sharp; they twitch their whiskers and nose to explore. They rely on smell to tell friend from foe and recognize their kits and owner, and they approach another chinchilla whose scent attracts them.
4. Touch. Fairly acute, relying on whiskers of varied length like a ruler to judge distance and navigate in the dark.
5. Taste. They tell edible from inedible, but what they think is edible may not be good for them, so keep the environment clean to avoid diarrhea and gut trouble.
