Mandarin Rat Snake

1 Overview

The mandarin rat snake (Euprepiophis mandarinus) is a strikingly marked, calm colubrid from the mountains of China, with bold black-and-white banding. It is a favourite among rat-snake enthusiasts.

SOURCE NOTE: the source used the older name Elaphe mandarinus; the current genus is Euprepiophis.

2 Appearance

The body is banded black and white/grey with an irregular pattern and a rounded head. Adults are 70-120 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

A secure, cool-leaning terrarium with a temperature gradient, hides, and a water bowl. Generally docile but can be shy.

Anorexia during acclimation is common; offer appropriate prey and minimise stress.

4 Habitat & Environment

Montane forest and grassland. Mimic with a moisture-retentive substrate, cover, and a cool-warm gradient.

5 Diet & Feeding

Feeds on rodents; in captivity accept appropriately sized rodents every 1-2 weeks. Hatchlings may need scenting.
