Yellow-footed Tortoise

1 Overview

The yellow-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis denticulatus) is a large tropical tortoise of South American rainforests, very similar to its red-footed relative but with yellow-orange limb scales. It is active, outgoing, and long-lived.

Like the red-foot it can reach around 80 years, so it is a multi-decade commitment.

2 Appearance

The carapace is elongated and dark with a lighter central area in some; the legs and head carry yellow to orange scales. Adults commonly reach 35-45 cm.

3 Care & Temperament

Needs a warm, humid, planted enclosure with sun and shade plus a sheltered retreat. Pneumonia and colds follow cold or damp drafts, so keep temperatures stable.

They are social and curious, often approaching keepers at feeding time.

4 Habitat & Environment

Tropical forest edge: high humidity, warm temperatures, and a moisture-holding substrate. Outdoor setups suit frost-free climates.

5 Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous-frugivorous: leafy greens, flowers, and a wide variety of fruit, with modest protein. Provide calcium and avoid excess fruit sugar.
