Which Turtle Species Are the Most Personable?

Most turtles are fairly intelligent, but some bond with people more than others — red-eared sliders, Burmese tortoises, yellow-spotted river turtles, painted turtles, and the gentle Chinese pond turtle among them. Success still depends on a right-sized tank, clean water, and daily basking light.
1 Personable Species
Red-eared slider: one of the smartest; with daily feeding and talking it remembers and bonds with its owner and follows at heel. Burmese tortoise (Burmese mountain tortoise): common, plant-eating, cheap to keep, hardy, and easy. Alligator snapping turtle: much larger and fiercer-looking, but very hardy and smart, now rare from overhunting. Yellow-spotted river turtle: odd-looking, cute, greedy for tender plants, docile, highly interactive, colorful, and ornamental. Painted turtle: a smart, unfussy freshwater turtle that loves basking, showing bright shell patterns. Chinese flower turtle: aquatic, large, colorful, docile, and rarely bites. Chinese pond turtle (golden turtle): the widest-ranging and most popular pet in China, gentler and more people-oriented than most, which is exactly why it is loved.
2 General Care
Pick a tank sized to the number and size of turtles, preferably larger, with a basking platform; decide on tank mates (small fish, plants, shrimp) by species. Change water regularly but keep the level modest so breathing is easy, and keep it clean to avoid bacteria and oxygen loss — different species need different depths. Give diffuse sunlight about half an hour daily but avoid harsh sun; add duckweed or plants for shade so the turtle can hide when hot.
