Is Dog Constipation Caused by Too Little Water?

1 Causes
In some ways dogs constipation less than cats, since feline cases are mostly swallowed hair and dogs don’t groom like that — but once a dog is constipated, hair remedies won’t fix it. Causes include too little fiber (few vegetables or fruit), too little exercise (which slows gut motility and digestion), anal-gland cysts or blockage and an enlarged prostate, a swallowed foreign object lodged in the gut, intestinal or pelvic tumors, pelvic injury, or neurological disease — plus drug side effects and dehydration.
2 Signs and Risk
No stool for two days, or straining, crying, or blood when trying to go, means constipation. Puppies and seniors are most prone and most likely to develop secondary problems; constipation brings poor appetite, weight loss, and lethargy, and in seniors retained stool can inflame the gut and even threaten life. Beyond diet, stress and an unfamiliar environment — common in puppies — can also cause it.
