1 Overview

If not weaned at the right time, a kitten may want mother’s milk into adulthood. Usually by 2 months it should be fully weaned.

Weaning is gradual, not sudden one day. It is the stage from mother’s milk to other staple food – kibble or raw.

1. Weaning time

At 1 month, weaning begins, but lasts until before 2 months, the end date by your vaccine plan. People think mother’s milk has natural immunity that conflicts with later vaccines, making them fail, so usually fully wean before the first shot.

2. Food transition

At home, a kitten about 1 month has muscle to walk steadily and gets playful, leaving the mother to explore. It also learns by watching other cats eat kibble and use the box. This is the best time to start transition.

To try food beyond milk, you need to buy:

High-quality milk replacer: goat milk formula suggested.

High-quality kibble: high meat, high protein.

Raw meat

Use milk cautiously as replacer – not for lactose intolerance, but a kitten’s weak gut cannot digest common store milk, causing diarrhea, bloating. Diarrhea is deadly dangerous for kittens; severe cases dehydrate and kill.

When a kitten first tries non-milk food, replacer is the staple, but it won’t drink at first; let the mother drink, then put the kitten nearby to learn. If you feed kibble, likewise put the kitten near other cats eating so it watches. Soak kibble and feed; the mother used to dry food sees it as new; soak a bowl for her and the kitten copies.

If you feed raw, put meat on the floor – the kitten needs no lesson, smells it and eats. Carnivore nature.

This stage buy kitten-suitable dishes, e.g. shallow bowls. Likewise for litter training use a low box the kitten can climb into.

3. Do not forcibly take the kitten from the mother

Inexperienced breeders think weaning means forced separation – wrong. As said, kittens learn by watching; forced separation only loses security. Separation is gradual; start with 3-5 hours a day. At this stage full milk cutoff is not needed, so it is fine.

Later, after 1.5 months, separate longer, 8-10 hours; during separation mother and child meet but avoid milk, just a visit. The mother’s instinct makes her seek the kitten; do not pity. The kitten has things to play; only cries for mom at sleep. Near 2 months the kitten should eat non-milk food as staple. The urge to nurse remains strong; replacer satisfies the mouth need.

The whole weaning idea:

Provide replacer

Provide solid food

Gradual transition

Notes:

1. Use a bowl for replacer and food so the kitten learns bowl eating.

2. Do not press the kitten’s head into the bowl to teach drinking – easy to aspirate.

3. At first the kitten may step into the bowl or play with food; be patient.
