Gestation Periods of Common Animals
π Summary
Passing on one's genes is an instinct of living things. Animals usually come into heat and conceive in seasons with abundant food, and give birth when food is plentiful, but some breed year-round.
1 Overview
Year-round breeders store enough nutrition and can get it any time, such as domestic pigs. After heat, mating and pregnancy comes the gestation period. How long is it for different animals?
The gestation period is the time during which the embryo and fetus of a viviparous animal complete their growth and development in the uterus.
Gestation length differs by species, and also varies among breeds and even among individuals of the same breed, but each species has its own average and range under normal conditions. Normally, length is affected by the mother, the fetus, the environment and genetics, and varies within a certain range.
The table below shows the gestation periods of common animals:
Animal species | Average gestation days | Gestation range
Rabbit | 30 | 30~33
Cat | 58 | 55~60
Dog | 62 | 59~65
Pig | 114 | 102~140
Cattle | 282 | 276~290
Horse | 340 | 295~315
Although gestation periods differ, they float within a certain range. If your pet is pregnant, you can estimate the delivery time from the gestation period, so you can prepare in time and avoid unnecessary panic and mistakes.
