1 Causes of Yellow-Red Urine in Cats

Cat urine is normally clear and pale yellow. When the color deepens and takes on a red tint, it usually points to a urinary tract infection, urolithiasis (bladder or urethral stones), or another lower-urinary problem. Most cats descend from desert ancestors and naturally drink little, and their kidneys reabsorb water strongly. Combined with a habit of low water intake, this concentrates the urine, strains the kidneys, and lets crystals form, irritating the urethra and inviting infection — leading to urethritis, cystitis, or bladder stones. The result is yellow urine, blood in the urine, painful crying while urinating, frequent trips with only small amounts, and even urinary blockage.

Note, however, that much redder urine — bright or dark red — can mean the cat swallowed chocolate, rat poison, or another toxic substance, causing hemolysis and bloody urine. It can also come from internal bleeding after a car accident or a severe fall. These cases need the fastest possible trip to a veterinary hospital.

2 Treating Reddish Urine

If the urine is mainly yellow with a few streaks or a faint red tint, a urinary tract infection is the most likely cause. In that case, give a broad-spectrum antibiotic such as cefadroxil tablets plus hydrochlorothiazide tablets and watch for improvement. Cefadroxil targets the E. coli and staph that commonly infect the cat’s urinary tract; hydrochlorothiazide promotes sodium-potassium exchange and urine formation, reducing crystal concentration and helping normal urination.

If symptoms do not ease or keep returning after medication, other causes or poor dietary management may be at fault. Encourage more daily drinking to flush the urinary tract and ease inflammation, and have a vet check for any hidden underlying disease.
