Causes and treatment of arowana head-down syndrome

1. Congenital causes or low temperature causing swim-bladder dysfunction, leading to head-down. Prevention: avoid large temperature changes and frightening the fish, and prevent it hitting the tank wall and affecting the swim bladder. Treatment: this type has little chance of cure; only physical methods can sustain it for a while.

2. Head-down from low daily activity. Prevention: ensure daily exercise, e.g., by tempting feeding or adding a wave pump. Treatment: give a spacious space, tempt-feed the affected fish, or control the wave pump timing to encourage movement and maintain proper exercise.

3. Head-down from arowana ascites. Prevention: ascites usually comes from feeding unclean or hard-to-digest food, so clean food first and remove sharp parts like shrimp spikes to avoid esophageal injury or gut discomfort, preventing enteritis, ascites, and head-down. Treatment: treat the enteritis from ascites; if mild, use the old three methods; if severe, use a clean syringe to draw out the fluid.

4. Head-down from poor water quality. Prevention: provide a good environment; pre-condition water before changes to avoid excess ammonia causing head-down. Treatment: adjust water quality, change regularly. Note: avoid large differences in temperature and pH between new and old water.
