Signs of a Pregnant Chinchilla
π Summary
A pregnant chinchilla changes in temperament (irritable, aggressive, rejects others β house alone, away from males), diet (early appetite drop then big increase, near-starvation 1β2 days before birth; add calcium, vitamins, easily digested food), sleep (much more, deep), stamina (less β avoid hard exercise to prevent shock), and weight (clear gain after a month β weigh daily). Keep her calm, well-fed, and in a clean, quiet home.
1 Changes and Care During Chinchilla Pregnancy
Changes and care after a chinchilla becomes pregnant
1. Temperament changes:
She becomes unusually sensitive, irritable, and aggressive, rejecting other chinchillas β though her attitude to the owner usually stays the same. A clueless male trying to mate or approach can trigger a fierce fight and injury, so house her alone, especially away from males. Also avoid taking her out, letting strangers near, or scaring her, to prevent premature birth or miscarriage.
2. Diet changes:
Early pregnancy brings reduced appetite, then a growing appetite for nutritious food, until 1β2 days before birth when she eats less or stops. Supply ample, balanced nutrition β calcium and vitamins β and easy-to-digest food, since lowered activity causes constipation. Mix a little milk powder into the staple, give some hay, and if possible feed semi-dry fresh alfalfa and an apple daily.
3. Routine changes:
She sleeps much more and deeply; late pregnancy brings side- or back-lying poses, so give a quiet, comfortable, dry resting place.
4. Stamina changes:
Exercise endurance drops; shorten playtime and avoid hard exercise, but keep her usual rhythm. Hard exercise can make the fetuses drain the mother’s blood oxygen and cause shock or sudden death.
5. Weight changes:
After a month, weight rises clearly in step with litter size. Weigh daily or every other day to track her and the kits’ condition.
We hope owners give the pregnant chinchilla good care for a safe new arrival.
