What happens if cats and dogs eat salt?

Too much salt in cats and dogs can cause problems. First, excess salt causes fluid loss and dehydration, and severe dehydration leads to electrolyte imbalance that can be life-threatening. Second, too much salt burdens the kidneys and causes kidney disease.

Also, salt raises metabolic load and may cause poor appetite, vomiting and diarrhea. Therefore, control salt intake and avoid human food.
