The Uromastyx is medium-sized with gorgeous colors and a gentle temperament, unlike fearsome wild lizards, making it a popular reptile. Imported types include Mali, Moroccan, ornate, Somali, peacock, Indian and Niger varieties.

At first only dull Mali and some red or yellow Moroccan ones drew little attention due to high price, but after ornate and peacock types arrived the market warmed up.
