Take the dog to the hospital promptly to avoid delay, and watch for discomfort such as vomiting, loss of appetite, drowsiness, diarrhea or lack of stool. Gastroenteritis symptoms last about a week and need plenty of water or fluids plus mucosal protectors, antiemetics and antidiarrheals.

Most soaps are made from natural ingredients and are not toxic, but a few add essential oils that are strongly toxic to dogs. Soap is also alkaline and can cause vomiting and diarrhea; a large bar may even cause an intestinal blockage requiring surgery.
