How good is a Dalmatian as a guard dog?

The Dalmatian is fairly good at guarding. Originally called the Dalmatian, it is alert and intelligent, and barks loudly to scare off strangers. It is also loyal and obedient, so can be trained as a family guard dog.

But whether a dog guards also depends on temperament; some Dalmatians only bark when excited or playing and lack alertness and territorial instinct, so cannot guard.
