A fevering dog has a high temperature, red eye membranes, dry nose, fast breathing, low appetite and lethargy; with a thermometer, a rectal reading over 39.5 C confirms fever. Try physical cooling first by wiping paws, ears and belly with diluted alcohol or placing ice wrapped in a towel by the belly; if that fails, see a vet and find the cause.
