You can tell by palpation. Normally, a fractured or broken bone is so painful the rabbit can barely walk, and in severe cases the leg swells and bruises with darkening skin. Feel the leg to check for a protruding broken end from a fracture. A dislocation usually does not cause much swelling.

For a definite diagnosis, take the rabbit to a vet for an X-ray.
