1 Common causes
Cold syndrome: a newborn pup’s temperature falls in a cold environment. Toxic-milk syndrome: newborn pups that drink a sick mother’s milk, often with diarrhea and crying. Shock: from crushing or impact injuries, or during illness, with weak pulse, pale gums, and cold extremities. Dehydration: after heavy vomiting, severe diarrhea, or long thirst, with poor skin elasticity and a dry nose. Neurologic distemper: full-body spasms during illness. Leptospirosis, especially the hemorrhagic-jaundice form with bloody stool and urine. Uremia: kidney failure lets waste build up and lowers temperature. Brain tumor: disrupts the temperature-control center. And others: organophosphate poisoning, heatstroke, diabetes, tetanus, or the moments before death.
2 What to do
Low temperature is a red flag, not a minor quirk. Warm the dog gently if it is chilled, but seek veterinary care promptly, because the underlying cause (shock, dehydration, kidney failure, poisoning, or disease) decides the treatment. Puppies with falling temperature need urgent attention.
