1 When They Can Breed
These turtles are long-lived (40 to 60 years) but grow slowly, usually taking 5 to 7 years to mature. Good environment and ample food help them develop on schedule.
For a breeding plan, keep one male and one female; a female can lay eggs on her own, but without a male they won’t be fertilized. Build a soft, sandy nesting area at the pool edge to improve success.
2 How They Reproduce
They mate around mid-April and lay from May to September, typically 1 to 5 eggs per clutch (usually 3). Beyond maturity, they need a suitable environment and a mature pair of opposite sex for fertilization.
Before mating, the male circles the female; if she stays still, pairing succeeds and he mounts her back. They lay at dawn or dusk in a quiet, moist spot; without a good site they scatter eggs and yield fewer.
A fertilized egg shows a semen spot (white dot) within hours to 3 days—earlier spots mean higher hatch success. Incubate at 28 to 31°C with about 80% humidity, and eggs hatch in roughly 70 to 80 days.
