1 Common Causes
A little dandruff from normal metabolism is fine, but too much with any skin change deserves attention.
Dry skin. Low humidity or low water intake dries the skin and sheds flakes.
Infection. Fungal or bacterial skin disease brings white flakes plus itching, redness, and hair loss.
Parasites. Mites or fleas irritate the skin, causing scratching, flaking, and hair loss.
Allergies. Food, environment, or contact allergies inflame the skin and raise flaking.
Poor nutrition. Missing fatty acids or vitamins dries the coat.
Wrong bathing. Too-frequent washes or human shampoo strip the protective oils and worsen flakes.
2 What to Do
Moisturize. In dry conditions use a pet moisturizer or natural oils like olive or coconut oil; never use human skin products.
Bathe gently. Use mild pet shampoo, at most once a week and every one to two months in winter.
Deworm. Internal deworming every one to three months and external monthly in summer, every two to three months in winter, cuts parasite irritation.
Adjust diet. Add unsaturated fatty acids, lecithin, and vitamins to support skin immunity.
See the vet. If flakes persist or worsen with itching, hair loss, or redness, get a skin scrape under the microscope for targeted treatment.
