Diarrhea caused by changing a cat’s food generally heals on its own, because a cat’s digestive system is sensitive and a sudden food switch easily irritates the stomach, leading to soft stools, diarrhea and similar symptoms. The owner can switch back to the previous cat food and then give the cat an appropriate amount of pet probiotics to regulate its gut; usually it recovers on its own after a few days.

But if the cat’s stomach remains irritated, it may develop chronic gastroenteritis, causing frequent vomiting and diarrhea. This requires anti-inflammatory and stomach medicine, and attention to daily diet – feeding the cat small amounts frequently – and only after a period of care can it be cured.
