1 Why a Hamster May Be Lethargic and Refusing Food

Newly arrived hamsters often seem listless with little appetite, and inexperienced owners panic. To avoid random guessing, here are the common reasons a hamster is lethargic and will not eat.

1. Not Yet Used to the Environment

A hamster just brought home may be scared of the new surroundings and too nervous to eat. It may pace or chew the cage and hide when approached. This usually resolves in 2-3 days – keep things quiet and do not disturb it.

2. Frightened

After a scare or shock a hamster may go limp or play dead, but it typically recovers after resting quietly. Keep food and water clean and the cage tidy to prevent illness from stress-weakened immunity.

3. Illness

A hamster with a cold, gut infection, internal parasites, low blood sugar, or injury may be listless and refuse food. Watch for diarrhea, damp fur near the anus, abnormal gait, pale mucous membranes, or a wet nose, and take it to a vet promptly.

4. Too Hot

Hamsters cool poorly and lose appetite in extreme heat, even risking heatstroke. In summer keep the cage in a cool, airy spot with plenty of water, and offer probiotics to support appetite and digestion.

5. Normal Sleep Pattern

Hamsters are nocturnal – they sleep most of the day and are active around 7-10 p.m. Daytime sleeping with evening activity is normal. Constant sleeping around the clock, though, suggests illness – judge with other symptoms.

6. Low Temperature

Hamsters are sensitive to cold as well as heat. The comfortable range is 20-28 C; in winter they easily lose appetite and become depressed, and low temperatures can cause frostbite, colds, shock, or death. Check and improve the ambient temperature promptly.
