1 What Fluffing Means
Fluffing is common: a healthy bird’s feathers are smooth and flat, but when unwell or inflamed they spread loose and even stand up. Check the droppings and overall state to tell why.
2 Cold or Poor Diet
Cold triggers fluffing as self-protection; keep the room above 10 C. A lack of key nutrients also fluffs the feathers, so balance the diet with nuts, vegetables, and fruit beyond the main feed.
If the bird is only fluffed with normal droppings, it is usually minor – offer warm water and cooked food.
3 Gut Inflammation
Full-body fluffing with constant watery diarrhea points to gut inflammation. Give an anti-inflammatory, first softened in water and dosed exactly – never overdose.
4 Watch for Plague
If fluffing persists after a few days of care, with lethargy, rising temperature, and no appetite, suspect a serious infection (plague) and take the bird to a vet promptly.
