Why Is My Dog Coughing

πŸ“ Summary

The reasons a dog coughs include the following conditions.

1 Overview

I. Occasional

Brief coughs are usually from temporary strong irritation of throat/trachea: wrong leash, industrial odors, chili or pesticide smells.

How to handle this?

Timely handling and avoidance; to reduce secondary problems and chronic respiratory disease, see a vet if coughing persists.

II. Viral Infection

Repeated persistent cough is complex; unvaccinated dogs are vulnerable to respiratory viruses (distemper, parainfluenza type II, adenovirus). These coughs are persistent, severe, with poor prognosis and tricky treatment.

III. Bacterial and Fungal Infection

Common respiratory infections (pneumococcus, staph, strep, bordetella, H. influenzae, mycoplasma, chlamydia); fungal pneumonia and pulmonary mite disease are rarer.

IV. Parasitic Infection

Heartworm, lung capillary nematode, toxoplasma and other parasites cause related respiratory disease (clean keeping, timely deworming and vaccination matter).

V. Foreign Objects

Aspiration pneumonia is from irritating, non-digestible foreign material entering the airway causing respiratory disease.

VI. Cold

A ‘cold’ is the umbrella term for upper-respiratory signs (headache, fever, runny nose, eye discharge, sneezing, sore throat, cough). It’s complex (wind-cold, wind-heat, summer-damp, epidemic types; external and internal cough). Owners reduce it to ‘cold,’ but it can progress to bronchitis, pneumonia or worse β€” a cold can be deadly for dogs.

VII. Heart Disease

Older animals with obesity and circulation issues get cardiogenic cough; seniors need better nutrition management and physical check-ups.

All the above may occur alone, mixed, or with secondary/complicating conditions. Since pets can’t speak, treat proactively per the situation.
