1 If Your Cat Suddenly Refuses the Bed

A strong or unpleasant smell. Cats have a keen sense of smell and dislike strong scents. If the bed gives off a pungent odor—say perfume or citrus—the cat will avoid it, let alone sleep in it. Try spraying a cat pheromone in the bed to mask the smell it dislikes; if the odor is too strong to cover, wash the bed before use.

The bed is dirty. Cats are very clean and hate dirty things—they groom themselves several times a day. They may even refuse water they find stale. The same goes for the bed: if it is filthy, the cat will shun it. Keep the bed clean and wash it as soon as it gets soiled.

The bed is damp. A damp bed feels neither warm nor comfortable, so the cat leaves for somewhere drier. Keep an eye on whether the bed stays dry.

The bed is too small. A bed bought while the cat was growing becomes cramped as the cat gets bigger. It may squeeze in but feel restricted from stretching or changing position—and cats sleep in all sorts of sprawled poses. A cramped bed limits them, so they stop using it.

2 If It Never Liked the Bed

Wrong material. Cats differ in preference—some like fuzzy fabrics—and their needs shift with the weather. A thick bed in summer feels hot, so they avoid it. Adjust the bed to the season: a cooler one when it is warm, a warmer setup once temperatures drop. At any time, keep it odor-free, since a bad smell alone will make them abandon it.

Wrong placement. Cats are sensitive to noise, so place the bed somewhere relatively quiet. A noisy spot disturbs their sleep and they will not use it. Watch where the cat already likes to nap and put the bed there.
