Your Scent Changed

Dogs identify people mainly by smell. Perfume, gasoline, hotpot, barbecue, or disinfectant on you can confuse them briefly.

Your Appearance Changed

Dogs also use vision (within about 50 meters). A big change in clothing or distance, especially upwind where they can’t smell you, can delay recognition.

Your Footsteps

Keen hearing lets them recognize your walk or vehicle; a new gait or transport can throw them off.

Your Voice Changed

An unusual tone may puzzle them, but only temporarily — they don’t rely on voice alone.

Old Age

Senior dogs lose sight, hearing, and smell, and some develop dementia. Puppies and newly adopted dogs also don’t know you well yet — interact more to slow cognitive decline.

Bad Mood

A sulking dog may just be ignoring you; it knows you but doesn’t feel like engaging.

Temperament

Some breeds, like the Afghan Hound, are dreamy and may seem not to notice you while spacing out.
