Why Does Your Dog Crawl Under the Sofa?
π Summary
To us a dog seems thick-skinned - scolded one second, your 'good boy' the next. But a dog's inner world is rich. Let's read it through this common behavior.
1 Overview
Today, let’s read a dog’s inner world through this common behavior.
Why does a dog crawl under furniture?
Note: any of these may drive it under; occasional behavior is fine, but if frequent, pay attention!
Private space
To a dog, a small space makes a fine den.
Unlike people – a human under the sofa feels only suffocation (save the unspeakable). Almost all humans fear tight spaces by nature.
Dogs differ: as long as they can slip in and out, tight is fine – even reassuring.
Hence ‘private space.’ People need space from each other; dogs do too. If the sofa/bed underside is dirty, get a crate – same feeling.
Fear
When exhausted, a human’s first move is home.
Dogs too – after a scare they seek safety; some find the owner, some a corner, some under bed or sofa.
Not just fear – any discomfort can drive it under table or sofa.
Environment change
Many dogs show this after a sudden change of home.
Why? Dogs are creatures of habit; once used to a life, they grow behaviors from it.
Example: Wangcai lived in a villa; each morning the owner opened the door for yard play, and the dog learned that time and enjoyed it.
One day the owner went abroad, leaving him with a friend – no villa, no timed walks, no off-leash fun. The change unsettled and scared him.
What to do? Under the sofa or bed became Wangcai’s best shelter.
Other reasons
The above are common; some are rarer.
Like hiding things under the sofa – because the dog treats it as private space. Reflect: why not elsewhere, like its bed? Does it dislike the bed, or distrust it from some outside factor?
Another view: people say a dog hides under furniture when unwell – true, but ultimately it’s the fear from discomfort that sends it there.
