Why cats choke when drinking

1. Bad posture: drinking too fast lets water rush in and trigger choking; a bowl that’s too low or a poor angle also raises the risk.

2. Underdeveloped throat cartilage: young kittens may choke because their throat cartilage isn’t fully formed.

3. Health issues: mouth or throat injury, infection, or disease can impair normal drinking and raise choking — especially with mouth ulcers or a sore throat.

Individual traits (breed, age, build) also play a role.

Choking isn’t normal; find the cause and act. When it happens, pat the back or hold the cat at a 45-degree angle to help clear water. If severe — water in the windpipe or lungs — get medical help fast. For frequent choking, a full exam finds the root cause for proper treatment.

To lower the risk:

1. Right bowl: taller and stable, so the cat keeps a good posture and angle.

2. Slow it down: if it gulps, offer water in smaller servings or use a gentle-flow fountain.
