Why does my hamster bite people?

A hamster may bite because it is not yet familiar with its owner. When the owner approaches, the hamster instinctively becomes nervous and scared, and bites in self-defense. In addition, many hamsters are quite curious and may mistake the owner’s finger for an unfamiliar food, giving it an exploratory nip.

Some owners handle hamster food before touching the hamster, leaving a food smell on their hands, so the hamster bites after smelling food. Finally, if an owner pets the hamster too roughly and makes it angry or agitated, it may also bite.
