Why does my dog keep barking in the middle of the night?

There are many reasons a dog barks through the night. First, in an unfamiliar environment it may bark constantly from discomfort, so the owner should comfort and stay with it.

Second, hunger or cold prompts loud barking to alert the owner; once fed and kept warm, the dog will settle down. Also, hearing strange noises at night often triggers barking to warn of and deter potential threats.

In addition, if the dog slept too much during the day and has excess energy at night with no one to play with, it may bark then too. Owners are advised to exercise the dog more in the daytime to burn off energy.
