1. It is fun. Some curious cats see dropping a toy in the bowl as a game. Many like flowing water and pawing it, sometimes dropping items in and patting them; so it may just be playful.

2. Attracting the owner’s attention. Many cats dislike being ignored. If dropping a toy first got a reaction, the cat learns it draws attention and may keep doing it.
