Why Do Hamsters Get Heatstroke?

1 Hamster Heatstroke
1. Cause: a cage in direct sun, or indoor above 30°C — especially with poor airflow — causes heatstroke; it can happen any season if the cage is in sun.
2. Signs: rapid breathing, vacant stare, loss of consciousness; the hamster lies still and unresponsive even to touch, with wet chin and belly. Severe cases can’t stand or faint.
3. Danger: death rate is very high — five minutes in direct sun can kill. Keep it out of sun and around 25°C.
4. Treatment: move it to a breezy 25°C space, give saline to cool and rehydrate, then a little glucose water as it recovers. Ice packs around the cage help.
5. Prevention: at 28°C, act — an air-conditioned room or ice packs around the cage, but never on top of it (meltwater drips and chills the hamster). Guard against heat every season, not just summer.
