Why do cats develop stomatitis?

Feline stomatitis has many causes, including mechanical, physical, and chemical irritation, or secondary disease. If a cat’s mouth is accidentally pierced by sharp objects like fish bones, nails, or glass shards, oral mucosal infection easily follows and leads to stomatitis. Burns or accidental ingestion of strong chemicals also readily cause it.

Stomatitis may also be secondary to other diseases such as calicivirus infection or B-vitamin deficiency. Owners should judge the specific cause by observing symptoms and the actual situation.
