For cats, squeezing into a box is like a conditioned instinct—ancestors had many predators (foxes, wolves, eagles).

Hiding in narrow spaces protects from predators; concealed or high spots give ‘I’m hidden, they’re exposed’ security; large predators can’t reach; no side or rear attack—safer.

Usually cats curl up, protecting the vulnerable belly; belly injury can be fatal.

If a cat feels safe, it sleeps belly-up spread out. But a cat in a box, content, purring, doesn’t mean unsafe—just a hidden spot to sleep well matters; cats sleep 20+ hours.
