Why are my Labrador’s eyes red?

Red eyes in a Labrador may be caused by irritation from a foreign object. Because the dog’s eyes are large, dust, sand, and hair in the environment can easily get in and irritate the conjunctiva, causing redness; usually rinsing with saline solution or an eye-cleaning liquid is enough.

Second, ingrown eyelashes (distichia) can also redden the eyes; the owner can trim them regularly or have surgery to fix the root cause. Finally, eye diseases such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and iritis can also cause red eyes. If you notice frequent tearing, lethargy, reduced appetite, or increased eye discharge, take the dog to a vet promptly.
