1 Causes and Remedies for a Turtle Spitting Out Food

1. Environmental stress. A newly homed turtle that is unfamiliar with its surroundings may regurgitate from stress. Do not intervene much; keep the habitat good and wait about a week for it to adjust, after which normal eating resumes.

2. Large temperature swings. If tank water rises or drops by more than 5°C from weather or season change, the turtle may spit food or lose appetite entirely. Keep the temperature around 20 to 25°C for healthy growth.

3. Food problems. Spoiled, expired, or oversized food can cause regurgitation after the turtle takes it in. Check freshness and expiry dates, and cut food into small pieces to avoid this.

4. Illness. Gastroenteritis, pharyngitis, a cold, or pneumonia can lower appetite and cause mid-meal spitting. In this case, take the turtle to a vet promptly so the condition does not worsen and threaten its life.
