When Golden Retrievers Blow Their Coat

A Golden’s puppy coat usually sheds at about 4–5 months and enters the blow phase, lasting a few months and ending around 8–11 months when the coat settles. During this time the dog needs extra nutrition — it’s also a fast-growth stage where both development and coat change consume a lot. To grow a better coat, supplement lecithin and vitamins as follows:

1. Feed salmon: salmon has quality protein plus vitamins, fats, minerals and unsaturated fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6, which clearly improve coat quality, so offer some during the blow phase.

2. Seaweed powder: it contains protein, amino acids, vitamins, carbohydrates and minerals; taken in moderation it tightens skin, prevents dry coat and shedding, promotes hair growth, and deepens coat color and pigmentation.

3. Cooked egg yolk: rich in protein, fat, vitamins and minerals plus natural lecithin, it helps beautify coat and skin. But don’t overfeed — cholesterol can upset the stomach and burden the liver, so keep it moderate.

4. Lecithin: it breaks down and emulsifies oils, renews skin, slows skin aging and promotes hair growth. During the blow phase, supplement moderately to help the coat and raise its quality. If the dog refuses plain lecithin, mix it into food or drinking water.

Beyond nutrition, for better coat quality do the following care:

1. Brush often. During the blow phase brush daily morning and evening for about 5 minutes to remove loose hair and dirt, prevent mats, and boost circulation and growth. Bathe regularly with a dog-specific shampoo — never human shampoo, which dries the coat and causes abnormal shedding.

2. Deworm regularly. Parasites badly damage coat and skin, causing dry, falling hair and making the blow harder. Before 6 months, deworm internally and externally every month; after 6 months, internal deworming every 3 months and external every month, to protect coat and skin.
