When can a puppy defecate on its own?

Generally, a puppy can defecate on its own about 10 days after birth. Before 10 days of age, a puppy needs its mother to lick its genital area to stimulate elimination, otherwise it will hold everything in. If the mother dog does not stimulate the puppy, the owner can use a cotton swab dipped in warm water to gently wipe the puppy’s genital area to encourage defecation. After around 10 days of age, puppies can eliminate on their own, and the owner can place newspapers or puppy pads a bit away from the whelping box to train them and prevent accidents around the home.
