When Can a Cat Eat Hairball Paste, and How to Choose?

1 What Is Hairball Syndrome

Cats swallow floating fur daily while grooming; over time it balls in the stomach, and at a point irritates the gut and causes vomiting.

Severe cases show low appetite, rough coat, constipation, no stool and bloating — that is hairball syndrome.

2 When Do Cats Vomit Hairballs

Both long- and short-haired cats can get it, but not before 7–8 months; they only start grooming at 3–4 months, swallowing little then.

3 When Can Cats Eat Hairball Paste

At 3 months you can start prevention, but hold the paste then — deworming and vaccines are on, so less else. Use a little cat grass or a cat-grass hairball tablet (simple, safe) for that age, and prevent each shedding season (March–April, July–August).

4 How to Choose Hairball Paste

Prefer plant-extract paste with no mineral oil, hydrogenated vegetable oil or artificial attractants, so it does not irritate the gut and helps pass hair.
