1 How Sharp Cat Hearing Is

The outer ear includes the pinna and the ‘Henry’s pocket’, a pouch that filters and amplifies high frequencies and helps locate sound.

The inner-ear vestibular fluid lets a cat sense acceleration and keep balance—the same system that causes motion sickness in cats, as in people.

Cats have 32 ear muscles (people have 6) and each ear turns 180° alone; they hear low frequencies a bit worse than us but highs up to ~78 kHz—about 4× human, 1.5–2× dog.

2 Reading Ear Postures

Natural up: calm and relaxed, the default state.

Erect and forward: fully focused or curious; before a fight a cat erects ears to look bigger.

Swiveling: listening to faint sounds—relaxed if casual, alert if locked on a direction (prey or intruder).

Airplane ears (flattened back): fear or submission; pressed down means ‘I give up’, angled up means ‘I may fight’. A cornered cat may attack if blocked.

Twitching while asleep: dreaming (or shooing a bug / an itchy ear).
