What to Do When Your Hamster Has Heatstroke

1 Emergency Steps
Move the hamster to an air-conditioned room at once; lay it belly-up in a small towel-lined box, raise the towel as a windbreak and cover its abdomen and feet.
Dab saline on its mouth with a clean cotton swab so fluid enters the gut; if no saline, use cooled boiled water with a little salt — not as effective but it helps.
If it is critical — rapid or open-mouth breathing — while keeping it cool, give a tiny amount of a human emergency heart pill. If its feet go cold, rub them to aid circulation or gently massage the chest for steadier breathing.
After a while it may wake; keep giving saline for about three hours. Keep it wrapped but with air to breathe, resting in the AC room. Full recovery takes time, so keep its abdomen down for warmth.
2 Prevention
At 28°C start cooling; keep the room about 25°C. Without AC, place ice packs around the cage. Ceramic huts, pebbles, wood pellets and litter all help; prepare as needed.
