1. Poor water quality

Arowana tail rot is usually caused by poor water quality. Arowanas demand high water standards and are sensitive to fluctuations; bad water easily triggers tail rot and other diseases. Keeping water clean is the key to preventing many common arowana illnesses. If tail rot occurs, try the following:

Keep the water clean.

At the first sign, change water promptly and keep it clean. Regularly remove food debris and waste, and clean the filter so bacteria don’t multiply.

2. Bacterial infection of a wound

If a tail injury isn’t treated in time, bacteria can infect it and lead to tail rot. Despite their fierce look, arowanas have fragile tails, easily hurt in fights or collisions.

Treatment:

Isolate the injured or rotting fish immediately and add coarse salt to the tank to stop the wound worsening. For severe rot, apply potassium permanganate to the affected area.

3. Bacterial tail rot

Bacterial tail rot comes from bacteria in the water or food. For this, give the fish an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory bath once daily for 20 minutes, for about a week, until it recovers.
