1 Undigested Food in the Vomit
If vomiting comes without blood, fever, or other illness, and the vomit is just undigested food, the dog is likely fine. This usually happens when a dog bolts food without chewing, then vomits it after rough play — a normal protective rumination. Left alone the dog may eat it again (instinct), so clean up and offer a different meal; digestive tablets like diastase or yeast after eating help.

Here, fasting for a day is best. Owners often keep feeding out of pity, but that’s wrong — a dog tolerates hunger far better than overfeeding, and many illnesses stem from eating too much.
3 Watch the Color
The first two cases need only a few days of rest, but odd-colored vomit means possible disease: yellow-green is bile, and coffee-colored stomach fluid suggests bleeding, most often gastric or duodenal ulcers. Many other causes exist; if severe gut disease or other complications appear, go to the vet at once — this may be an early sign of distemper and can be fatal.
